To get rid of a bad habit is one of the hardest tasks for a person but we must never forget that the man’s will is one of the strongest powers in the world and we should learn to use it.
Do not lie to yourself
We are often ashamed to admit that we actually do not want to get rid of bad habit. We know that it is bad and we say that we want to get rid of it, but actually it is part of us and we secretly love it. The other option is just to be lazy and we don’t want to deal with it. If you are not honest and don’t admit to yourself the truth, the chance to get rid of the bad habit is very small. So admit to yourself: “Yes, I love this habit, but need to get rid of it and will do everything possible.”
Do not hesitate
The biggest enemy of the dilemma to do or not to do something is hesitation. If your will is weak and you have not decided to do or not to do something, probably you will soon break your promise. For example, if you are dieting and someone offers you a delicious cake, it depends mostly on the strength of your decision, if you are going to eat the cake or not. If you haven’t taken the 100% decision to follow your diet, you will slip easily.
Create a new habit
When you want to get rid of a habit, it is wrong to stand idly and coplain that you have nothing to do. Nature does not tolerate empty spaces – she tries to fill the blanks. Furthermore, when you focus your thoughts on the forbidden habit, the desire for it increases. It is best to create a habit, which is opposite of the bad one, and try to repeat it many times until it takes the place of the old one. For example, if you have a habit of scolding, try to smile and say something positive couple of times every day. If your hand is looking for lighter and cigarettes, find a job for your hands (knitting, sewing, constructing).
