Stress during pregnancy affects the health of future children for years to come, warn experts based on a study of the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London. They explain that it considered serious events resulting from heavy events such as bereavement and separation from a loved one. Such unpleasant experiences reflect negative health until four years old child and the future related to the development of chronic diseases. Second bad event increases the risk 5 times.
For this purpose, 150 women were interviewed in the early period of pregnancy and several weeks before term, focusing on the experiences during the nine months following the separation, job loss, death of a close or difficult to maintain pregnancy.
Later the same volunteers answer questions about the health of children enrolled are reasons for visits to the GP and the hospital.
From the research team found a strong link between stress in early pregnancy and cases of asthma or intestinal infections in children up to age 4. They say this is due to hormones or agents of the immune system by the mother during pregnancy that affect defenses future individual. Experts agree that the first two years after birth are crucial for the health of the child. “At this time we must add at least another six months – before birth,” says Dr. Carmine Perient, a psychiatrist, a leading expert associated with the project.
Since pregnant women are expected to be happy presume that bring new life, but this is not always so, said Dr. Perient. They are not insured by unpleasant events happen to them and all those pleasant and unpleasant moments, which are normally buried in everyday life. For a pregnant woman is hard to share that is depressed and it will hardly be understood by others. While some sympathetic to it, for others it is the opposite characteristic to that extra burden, says expert.
