U.S. biotechnologists have created a prototype of an artificial retina that requires power system and works with the energy of infrared rays

Nowadays scientists from around the world developed several implants that could in theory return vision loss due to degenerative disease or accident. In some cases, biologists are experimenting with stem cells or individual cells of the retina.

In other words physicists and biotechnologists are trying to adjust various electronic devices to work with the brain of humans and animals. But so far in no study was achieved substantial success.
A group of scientists at Stanford University in the United States under James Laudin now developed a new type of electronic retina eye adapted to obtain high-resolution images, which operate without an external power source – the most serious problem for the development of such technologies, report Science daily.

“Our invention works somehow like solar panels on the roofs of their homes, converting light into electrical impulses. In our case, however, no electricity powered fridge and headed to the retina as a signal,” says Daniel Palanker, one of the participants in the project.
Artificial retinas crated by Laudin and colleagues consist of many tiny single silicon wafer, combining light sensitive element generator of electricity, and also some additional elements. To operate the device, it is necessary even placement of special glasses with built-in video camera and PDA, image processing.
